The Buckle Scrunchie Story

I’m Hannah M. Le, and I’ve wanted Buckle Scrunchies since I was 13.

Traditional hair ties were uncomfortable, and removing them felt even worse. As a determined young athlete, I envisioned a hair accessory that wouldn’t ruin a victory after cheerleading or make losing a volleyball match suck even more.

Why did I wait an eternity to finally invent Buckle Scrunchies?

As a kid, I was convinced that my hair problem wasn’t “that bad.” There were products we’d been using forever, so surely they were “good enough,” right?

Years later as I was recovering from knee surgery, I rediscovered my college sewing machine. I trained to ski again, and I once again imagined something that would free my hair after removing the helmet, cinematically portraying how gratifying redemption felt.

After sewing 20+ prototypes, releasing the first successful Buckle Scrunchie taught me the difference between “satisfactory” and “satisfying.”

But I didn’t build this alone. My mom, a seamstress who runs a small alterations shop in Houston, hand-sources upcycled fabrics for every scrunchie. Together, we sew Buckle Scrunchies together and turn discarded materials into something rewarding and useful.

My mom, a Vietnamese-American immigrant and incredibly talented seamstress, saves designer dress hems, pristine fabric scraps, and upcycled fabric for every scrunchie from her own alterations shop in Houston.

Together, we sew Buckle Scrunchies together and turn discarded materials into something rewarding and useful.
